In information systems (IS) research the literature is commonly used to identify a gap in current knowledge and subsequently serve as the basis for hypothesis development. However the application of selected qualitative data analysis principles to literature may provide an alternative theoretical basis for understanding the phenomenon being studied. In this research investigating ‘IS business value’, an approach similar in principle to the pattern matching approach used in the analysis of qualitative case study data was applied to the literature resulting in the uncovering of multiple paradigms for assessing ‘IS business value’. As a consequence, instead of arriving at a specific paradigm as the research outcome, an attempt was made to develop a theoretical perspective that was capable of accommodating diverse representations of ‘IS business value’.
